So What Is The San Gabriel Valley?

Get To Know The Cities That Make Up The San Gabriel Valley.

Off the cuff, The San Gabriel Valley might be described as one of Southern California’s main valleys comprised of several cities and communities. But alas, if everything in life were but a simple answer. Mind you, this is not an article on what the essence, culture, or spirit of San Gabriel Valley is, but rather a geographic analysis to better understand what cities make up the area. Google San Gabriel Valley images and you’ll get tons of maps, all with different depictions of what SGV entails. After looking at so many maps, even we were perplexed by the different interpretations of boundaries. In the end, we used data from Metro (Los Angeles Transportation Authority) and the San Gabriel Valley Small Business Development Center.

Here’s how Metro defines the San Gabriel Valley in their transportation map (click to enlarge):

Metro Map of San Gabriel Valley

As you can see, the Metro map excludes Glendora and Claremont from the SGV region. It does include San Dimas, Pomona, Diamond Bar, and La Verne which are considered by many as part of the Pomona Valley. According to the San Gabriel Valley Small Business Development Center however, these four cities along with Claremont are considered part of the San Gabriel Valley for statistical and economic development purposes by the County of Los Angeles.

At SGV Up Close, we prefer to take the inclusive route rather than exclude what can make for a stronger and more diverse community. As far as our journalistic coverage, we’re excited to include stories from those cities on the map above as well as Glendora and Claremont, which we consider every bit as much a part of the SGV family. So to sum up, below is a list of cities we feel are part of the San Gabriel Valley. Feel free to comment below if you think we missed one are perhaps included one that might be questionable.
