Duarte head coach for the high school girls basketball team, Scott Wiard, has a lot to live up to.
His dad, Richard Wiard, has an incredible reputation around the San Gabriel Valley as one of the best high school girls basketball head coaches. As far as his son, Scott, is concerned – the apple did not fall far from the tree.
While the elder Wiard had an extremely successful run at Bishop Amat High School in La Puente, winning a total of five CIF titles, the junior Wiard is establishing a pretty impressive career himself as head coach of Duarte High School.
In his first season as Duarte head coach of the girls basketball team, he’s managed to take the team to the Division 4AA championship game. Scott may be starting his career as a head coach, but he’s no new kid on the block. He served as an assistant coach for his dad at Bishop Amat and worked on two other teams who had reached championship games. Oh yes, and now it’s dad who’s an assistant coach for his son at Duarte.
Nevertheless, Scott truly appreciates his dad’s experience and success and is glad to count on his father for advice. There’s no doubt the younger Wiard is on track to adding his own chapter to the rich history and successful basketball coaching legacy of the Wiard name.
