American Idol contestant Adanna Duru from Diamond Bar

18 Year Old Diamond Bar Student Advances To Top 10 In American Idol

American Idol has dwindled the number of contestants to 10 and 18 year old Adanna Duru from Diamond Bar is among the chosen few.

The confident singer from Diamond Bar who cites Madonna as her idol has fought hard, even overcoming a bad cold, to make it to the top 10. In the most recent round, contestants had to choose a song from a movie and Adanna picked Jennifer Hudson’s ‘Love You I Do’ from “Dreamgirls.”

The song seemed to be a good choice drawing positive comments from some of the judges. Harry Connick Jr. said she looked like a star on stage and country music singer Keith Urban said, “You sound great.”

“I’m doing whatever I can to get better for this week’s competition.”

Adanna is a recent Walnut High School graduate and has put her current UC Riverside studies on hold while she completes her American Idol dream. The aspiring songstress still takes time from her busy schedule however to share her experiences with students. Earlier this year, Adanna talked about her love for singing and performing as well as her experience as an Idol contestant at the Teen Center in Walnut.

The rising star is no stranger to the big stage. While still in high school, Adanna was a contestant on ‘The Voice,’ another televised singing competition broadcast on NBC. She credits that experience for preparing and making her a better ‘American Idol’ contestant.

“Honestly, you’re capable of everything you believe you’re capable of.”

Adanna points out that her single mother is her biggest supporter and that her brothers help keep her grounded, “My brothers got tired of me singing and would tell me to shut up!” Duru said. “They still do.”

To others with big dreams, she offers the following advice:  “A lot of people will tell you that your dream is stupid. I’ve been told that so many times. Honestly, you’re capable of everything you believe you’re capable of,” she said.

“If you really believe that you can do something and you have the discipline to know that when you fail it’s not the end. When you fail, you learn from your mistakes and keep changing and growing.  … It’s all just believing in yourself.”
